The Coulomb Pump: a Novel Parts Feeding Method Using a Horizontally-Vibrating Surface
نویسندگان
چکیده
Part feeders, which singulate and orient parts prior to packing and insertion, are critical components of an assembly line. Existing feeders utilize o -plane vibrations of a rigid structure to convey parts along a track. Repeated part hopping/landing phases are concerns if parts are delicate and/or high positioning accuracy is required. Here we consider a simpler feeder design in which parts are in permanent contact with a horizontally-vibrating at plate. Each vibration is a \pump-like" motion along a single degree of freedom: the plate spends more time moving forward than backward. Parts are propelled forward since dynamic friction is xed and independent of the relative velocity at the interface. In designing plate vibration pro les we consider issues of waveform simplicity, bandwidth, and feed rate performance. Both bang-bang and sinusoidal control waveforms are analyzed. Expressions are derived for equilibrium feed rates for both waveforms; dynamic simulation is used to verify the analysis. A prototype of the proposed feeder has been implemented with cheap mechanical parts. A simple experiment with the device is presented.

C'mon Part, do the Local Motion!
We describe a new control method for vibrationsbased planar manipulation. We’ve developed a device – the Universal Planar Manipulator (UPM) – based on a single, horizontally-vibrating plate. Though minimalist in construction (one moving part), the UPM can manipulate several parts on its surface in parallel, simply using friction. Previously, we’ve shown that a sequence of rigid plate rotations ...

متن کاملA genetic algorithm-based approach for numerical solution of droplet status after Coulomb fission using the energy
As a droplet moves, due to evaporation at the surface, the droplet size is gradually reduced. Due to decreasing the size of the droplets moving in the spray core, the surface charges become closer and the repulsive force between the charges increases. When the Coulombic force overcomes the surface tension force (Rayleigh instability) the droplet breaks into smaller droplets (Coulomb fission). T...
متن کاملDesign of a flexible parts feeding system
This paper describes the design and implementation of a flexible parts feeding system. While flexibility encompasses every part of the workcell design, including hardware and control software, the ability to feed parts in a wide variety of sizes and shapes is crucial. Conventional feeding methods, such as vibratory bowl feeders, are not practical for flexible workcells because of their speciali...

Nanotechnology involves the ability to see and control individual atoms and molecules which are about 100 nanometer or smaller. One of the major tools used in this field is atomic force microscopy which uses a wealth of techniques to measure the topography and investigates the surface forces in nanoscale. Friction force is the representation of the surface interaction between two surfaces an...
